What West Vancouver Parents Should Know

If you are searching for a Montessori preschool in West Vancouver, or even North Vancouver or Vancouver, you may be surprised to discover that not every school using the word Montessori actually follows authentic Montessori principles.

Because the name “Montessori” is not trademarked, any school can legally use it. This is even if their program does not follow the educational method developed by Maria Montessori.

For families seeking a true Montessori experience, understanding the difference matters.

Why the Name “Montessori” Isn’t Protected

Maria Montessori believed education belonged to children and humanity and not to a corporation. As a result, she did not trademark her name.

Today, this means:

  • Anyone can open a school and call it Montessori even if it's a childcare without Montessori learning or materials

  • There is no automatic oversight of quality or authenticity

  • Parents must ask informed questions

If you’re specifically looking for authentic Montessori education in West Vancouver, it’s important to look beyond marketing language.

What Makes a School Authentically Montessori?

At Treetops Montessori Preschool in West Vancouver, we align with core Montessori principles that distinguish authentic programs from “Montessori-inspired” classrooms.

Here are the key elements to look for:

1. Accredited Montessori Teacher Training

Authentic Montessori guides complete specialized training through recognized organizations such as:

  • Association Montessori Internationale (AMI)

  • American Montessori Society (AMS)

This training is rigorous and specific to developmental stages (for example, Casa 3–6).

2. Mixed-Age Classrooms (30 Months to School Age)

True Montessori classrooms group children in three-year age spans. This structure builds:

  • Leadership

  • Collaboration

  • Independence

  • Emotional intelligence

At Treetops Montessori Preschool, our classroom is licensed for children 30 months to school age, which is up to the start of Grade 1 school year in September, fostering a strong mixed-age community. We also are qualified by the BC Teachers Regulatory Board to teach Kindergarten.

3. Uninterrupted 3-Hour Work Cycles

Authentic Montessori classrooms offer long, uninterrupted morning work periods.

This allows children to:

  • Develop deep concentration

  • Complete full cycles of activity

  • Follow intrinsic motivation

Short rotations, constant transitions, or heavy group instruction are not traditional Montessori practice.

Although Treetops Montessori Preschool has a longer work cycle in the morning for our children that is occasionally broken up by yoga, music, and French language instruction, we have at least 2 hours in the morning of Montessori work that is uninterrupted, as well as time in the afternoon to work.

4. Complete Montessori Materials — Not Just Wooden Toys

Montessori materials are scientifically designed, sequential, and self-correcting. They are not simply aesthetic shelves or baskets.

Authentic materials support:

  • Early math foundations

  • Language development

  • Sensorial refinement

  • Practical life independence

“Montessori-Inspired” vs. Authentic Montessori in West Vancouver

Some schools use phrases like:

  • Montessori-inspired

  • Montessori-based

  • Play-based Montessori

These programs may include elements of the method but do not fully implement it.

If you are seeking:

  • A true Montessori preschool in West Vancouver or North Vancouver

  • A licensed 30 months to school age Montessori program

  • A classroom aligned with authentic Montessori philosophy

It’s important to ask deeper questions and look for wooden material that is purposeful and not just busy-work. You will not find toys in the classroom. You should look for example, to see if the classroom has a bead cabinet with concrete math material, like the one in this photo:

Questions West Vancouver Parents Can Ask...

When touring a Montessori preschool in West Vancouver, consider asking:

  • Are your teachers AMI or AMS trained?

  • Do children receive a full uninterrupted work cycle?

  • Is the classroom fully equipped with Montessori materials?

  • Is the classroom mixed-age?

  • Is the approach child-led rather than reward-based?

The answers will clarify whether the school follows authentic Montessori practice or a blended model.

Why Authentic Montessori Matters

When implemented faithfully, Montessori education supports:

  • Executive functioning

  • Self-discipline

  • Independence

  • Emotional regulation

  • Strong academic foundations

Inconsistent implementation can weaken these outcomes.

At Treetops Montessori Preschool, our goal is to preserve the integrity of the Montessori method while serving families in West Vancouver with warmth, professionalism, and transparency.
