Parents sometimes ask why yoga is included in our Treetops Montessori Casa classroom. It’s a good question. The answer is rooted in Montessori philosophy and child development. Yoga supports the whole child: physical growth, emotional regulation, and concentration, which are core goals of authentic Montessori education.
In a Montessori preschool environment, every activity has intention. Yoga is no exception.
Supporting the Developing Child in Montessori Preschool
Children in the Casa age group (2.5 to 6 years) experience rapid physical and neurological development. Yoga offers gentle, purposeful movement that supports this stage of growth and aligns naturally with Montessori for preschoolers.
Through yoga, children develop:
Balance, coordination, and body awareness
Strong gross motor skills and posture
The ability to move with control and intention
These skills directly support success in a Montessori classroom, where children are encouraged to move carefully, carry materials independently, and sustain focus during work periods.
Yoga and Self-Regulation in the Montessori Classroom
A central aim of AMI Montessori education is helping children develop self-regulation. Yoga and simple breathing exercises give children concrete tools to recognize their feelings and calm their bodies.
Yoga helps children:
Slow their breathing and movements
Manage big emotions in a healthy way
Develop focus and emotional awareness
Rather than being told to “calm down,” children learn how to calm themselves, which is an essential life skill supported by Montessori principles.
Building Independence and Confidence Through Montessori Yoga
Yoga in the Casa Montessori classroom is offered as a calm, guided group experience. There is no competition, no pressure, and no expectation of perfection.
Children are encouraged to:
Listen to their bodies
Work at their own pace
Build confidence through self-awareness
This mirrors the Montessori approach to independence, choice, and respect for the individual child.
Why Yoga Fits the AMI Montessori Philosophy
Dr. Maria Montessori emphasized the deep connection between movement and learning. She observed that children learn best when the body and mind work together.
Yoga supports Montessori education by:
Encouraging purposeful movement
Supporting concentration and focus
Promoting calm and order in the classroom
Respecting each child’s developmental timeline
In an AMI Montessori Casa program, yoga is not a separate extracurricular activity. It is a natural extension of Montessori’s holistic, child-centered approach.
What Yoga Looks Like in Our Casa Classroom
Yoga at Treetops Montessori preschool is gentle, brief, and developmentally appropriate at no more than 30 minutes, and it is hosted in the indoor gym space by our fun and creative yoga instuctor, Ms Rani, who always finds new and interesting ways to engage the children.
Activities may include:
Simple stretches and animal-inspired poses
Breathing exercises using storytelling and imagination
Short moments of stillness and quiet reflection
Yoga supports a peaceful classroom environment and helps children transition smoothly between activities.
Preparing Children for Life Beyond Preschool
Yoga helps children build lifelong skills such as emotional regulation, resilience, and self-awareness. These skills support academic learning, social development, and overall well-being, long after children leave the Casa classroom.
By including yoga in our Montessori Preschool classroom, we are supporting confident, capable, and centred children that are prepared not just for school, but for life.
