Supporting Calm, Focus, and Whole-Child Development
Yoga for preschoolers is a natural extension of the Montessori approach and we have an amazing yoga teacher, Ms Rani, to help us lead our yoga class. In a Montessori classroom, movement, mindfulness, and independence are essential to a child’s development. Introducing yoga in a developmentally appropriate way supports emotional regulation, concentration, and physical coordination, which are key foundations for lifelong learning.
Why Yoga Is Beneficial for Preschool Children
Preschool-aged children are developing body awareness, emotional control, and attention span. Montessori-aligned yoga supports these critical areas while respecting each child’s individual pace.
Benefits of Yoga for Preschoolers
Builds balance, strength, and coordination
Encourages emotional regulation and calm
Supports focus and concentration
Promotes confidence and independence
Enhances body awareness and self-control
Yoga is never forced in a Montessori environment. Children are invited to participate, observe, or rest, honouring freedom within limits.
How Yoga Fits Into the Montessori Method
Dr. Maria Montessori believed movement and learning are deeply connected. Yoga aligns with Montessori principles by allowing children to move with purpose and intention.
In a Montessori preschool classroom, yoga is:
Child-led and optional
Short and simple
Free of competition or correction
Yoga may be offered during morning circle, after outdoor play, or as a transition between activities. We choose to offer it in the morning when children soon after children arrive.
Montessori-Inspired Yoga Activities for Preschoolers
Montessori yoga uses familiar, concrete concepts that preschoolers can understand and enjoy.
Breathing exercises help children calm their nervous systems and develop self-soothing skills.
Yoga Can act as an Extension of Practical Life
In Montessori education, Practical Life activities help children care for themselves and their environment. Yoga supports this goal by teaching children how to care for their bodies and emotions.
Children may:
Roll out and return their own yoga mat
Choose a quiet space
Practice stillness and awareness
These actions reinforce independence, order, and responsibility.
Creating a Calm and Focused Learning Environment
When children feel regulated and centred, they are more prepared to engage in meaningful learning. Yoga helps create a peaceful classroom atmosphere where children feel safe, confident, and ready to explore.
By offering yoga in a Montessori-aligned way, preschools like Treetops support the development of the whole child, physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively.
